Hypnotherapy, Sleep and The Nickelback Effect

Learn to sleep well with stephmcgeehypnotherapy.com

Steph McGee

I’m a Trauma Informed Clinical Hypnotherapist on a mission to help. Hypnosis feels like a magic wand. But in truth? The real magic is you.

I observed the darnedest thing yesterday. And I’m not sure what was stranger. What I observed or the fact that I was surprised by it?

I’ll give you the background – as fast as I can.

I’m a Hypnotherapist

I know, but stay with me a mo. The power of Hypnosis astonishes me daily & this will blow your bed socks off!

So I’m a hypnotherapist who helps you move forward by finding inner solutions – often held within your subconscious. And we make beautiful achievements without needing to talk about the past.

I work holistically

What does that mean??? It means that whatever the problem, whatever you want to resolve; we go wherever each session takes us. So you may come to see me for a sleep problem but notice that far more than insomnia is resolved.

And that’s the Nickelback Effect

Let’s start with a couple of examples. Consider these Hypnotherapy session reviews if you will?

Confidence in 7 sessions:

  1.  Client’s first session for confidence (and only confidence)
  2. Client says their insomnia has gone & they are sleeping through the night
  3. Says their anger issues have stopped
  4. Sex life has improved 10 fold
  5. Parenting is no longer stressful & shouting as stopped
  6. Made a few outta the box changes & business sales have doubled
  7. Client confirms their confidence issues are resolved –  Personally & professionally

Social Anxiety in 6 sessions:

  1. Client’s first session for social anxiety (and only social anxiety)
  2. Client says their phobia of buttons had stopped, their insomnia has gone & they are sleeping through the night
  3. No longer shouting at the kids & the school run is a breeze
  4. Massively cut down on alcohol (which had been a problem)
  5. Stopped smoking (we did hypnotherapy to stop smoking session 4)
  6. Client confirms their social anxiety is resolved

So that is the Nickelback effect. But I only named that yesterday. Because yesterday, I saw The Nickelback Effect in action, in the place I least expected it.

I was minding my own business. Tidying the lounge. The kitchen radio was on – as always. Loud – as always. Husband listening to the Pop Quiz with Ken Bruce – as always. Normal. And  it happened. That Nicklelback song:

“I’m through standing in line, To clubs we’ll never get in, It’s like the bottom of the ninth, And I’m never gonna win…”

And nothing. Not a thing.

Now I’ve known my husband for a long time. And I accept him. Pros & cons. But there’s this one thing he does. And it’s that song. That Nickelback song.

When that song is on the radio my husband turns into a fire breathing dragon. And bellows:

“I HATE that song!”

“My EARS can’t take it…I can’t take it!!”

I then hear running (more screaming) and the radio is OFF. There’s inevitably a little more huffing & puffing (the way dragons do) before I hear a huge sigh of relief. And 10 minutes later, when it’s definitely safe to turn the radio back on, life returns to normal.

So why didn’t this happen yesterday?

Back when I was in hypnotherapy school, I needed volunteers. I prowled the school playground at pick up time for willing Mums. Some jumped at the chance of a freebie. Others women looked at me like I had three heads. So my husband offered himself up. But what on earth for? Sleep. Sounds like an easy win given the results with the clients I mentioned earlier, doesn’t it?

Believe me, it wasn’t. It’s not easy working with friends, let alone relatives. My hypnotherapy teacher warned me, but I didn’t listen. So both feet jumping straight in, I took on a chronic insomniac who just happened to be my husband.

The weeks rolled by and no results…as I said…working with relatives isn’t recommended in Hypnotherapy. Arguably the tipping point, was Integrated Parts Therapy, an advanced form of hypnotherapy. But the Solution Focused hypnotherapy played it’s part too.

The Hardest Hypnotherapy I’ve done

Because after weeks of challenging work with my husband, he said “I feel different” and “I’m sleeping!”

Then….“It’s that song. THAT song. That NICKELBACK song. It’s been on the radio and I’ve not turned it off. I’m not saying I like that song. I don’t. But I don’t need to turn it off.” he said. I was stunned. This was more significant than the sleep. Because I know how good hypnosis it for sleep. But I also know how much my husband hates that song. And this result confirmed everything I know about holistic therapy.

Then the days turned to weeks, turned to months and I just haven’t heard that song.

Until yesterday. And there it was. As I braced myself for the screaming which never came. I got my very own evidence that Solution Focused hypnotherapy is not only good – it’s astonishing. That clients, even the really challenging family members, clear far more stress & anxiety than they intended.

And I call it The Nickelback Effect.
